Upwork vs Fiverr for Hiring a Virtual Assistant: Which Fits Your Work
Upwork vs Fiverr for Hiring a Virtual Assistant: Which Fits Your Work

Quick answer: For hiring a virtual assistant, Upwork is usually the better marketplace when the work is ongoing and billed by the hour, because it is built around job posts, proposals, interviews, and weekly time logs. Fiverr is the better pick for a defined, one-time task you can buy as a fixed package, such as cleaning up a spreadsheet or setting up a CRM. On their standard plans, neither marketplace screens your VA for you or replaces one who leaves. For a dedicated full-time VA, Stellar Staff places a dedicated assistant from the top 0.1% of applicants for $1,999 a month at 160 hours.

Disclosure: Stellar Staff publishes this article. We are a VA staffing company, so for full-time roles we compete with both marketplaces. Every fact about Upwork and Fiverr below comes from their own pricing and help pages, checked on October 13, 2026, and each one is linked in the text.

Most Fiverr vs Upwork comparisons are written for freelancers deciding where to sell. This one is for the buyer who wants a dependable VA and needs to know what each site costs and what happens when a hire falls apart.

How Upwork and Fiverr Differ When You Are the One Hiring

The two sites start from opposite ends. On Upwork, you describe the job and freelancers come to you with proposals. On Fiverr, freelancers describe what they sell, and you browse and buy. Upwork feels like running a small hiring process. Fiverr feels closer to ordering a service from a catalog.

That difference matters for VA work. A designer can deliver a logo and be done. A virtual assistant's job changes week to week, and work like that fits an hourly arrangement better than a package with a fixed list of deliverables.

So is Upwork or Fiverr better for hiring? Fixed scope points to Fiverr. Open-ended, recurring hours point to Upwork. Forty hours a week, every week, is a third case, covered later in this article.

How Hiring a Virtual Assistant Works on Upwork

According to Upwork's client overview, you start by describing your goal in a sentence or two, and Upwork turns it into a job post you can edit. Freelancers then send proposals outlining their approach, and you can also search profiles and invite people to apply. You can message or video chat with candidates before you hire.

Once you pick someone, you create a contract that covers scope, timeline, and budget. There are two payment setups:

  • Hourly contracts. The freelancer logs hours each week, and you're billed automatically for approved time. You can review logged time before billing is finalized.
  • Fixed-price contracts. You fund milestones up front, the money is held in escrow, and it's released after you approve the work.

Upwork profiles show verified work history, client feedback, skill certifications, and identity verification badges. Clients on the Business Plus plan also get access to what Upwork calls "top 1% Expert-Vetted talent." On the Basic plan, though, screening is your job: you read the proposals, shortlist, interview, and test on your own.

Rates are set by the freelancer. Upwork's own virtual assistant cost page puts the median Upwork virtual assistant rate at $13 an hour, with most between $10 and $20. For rates outside Upwork, by country and role, see our guide to how much a virtual assistant costs.

Either party can end an Upwork contract at any time. That gives you an easy exit, and it means a good VA can leave on short notice too.

On Upwork, you run the screening yourself: reading proposals, shortlisting, interviewing, and testing.

How Hiring a Virtual Assistant Works on Fiverr

Fiverr is organized around gigs. Per Fiverr's help article on how Fiverr works for clients, freelancers list their services as gigs, and most offer three packages, Basic, Standard, and Premium, each with a set scope and price. You can also post a project brief and receive offers from freelancers, or ask a freelancer for a custom offer.

After the freelancer delivers, you accept the delivery, request revisions, or ask for more time from your Orders page. Accepting completes the order and releases payment to the freelancer. Pay attention to the clock here: if you take no action for 72 hours after delivery, the order completes automatically.

Fiverr virtual assistant gigs follow the same package format, priced per task, such as inbox cleanup, data entry, or research. For ongoing help, Fiverr also supports hourly orders. According to Fiverr's article on hourly orders for clients, they work like this:

  • You agree on a weekly hour limit as part of a custom offer, and you can change or remove it later.
  • The freelancer logs the week's hours by Sunday at 23:59 UTC, with a description or a supporting file for each entry.
  • You're charged every Monday for the logged hours, and the payment is held in escrow until you approve the weekly report.
  • Accepting the hourly custom offer carries a $5 order initiation fee.

Fiverr Pro is the vetted tier. Fiverr says in-house evaluators review each Pro freelancer on skills, delivery quality, client satisfaction, language proficiency, and performance metrics, among other areas. Fiverr Pro also lists a sourcing service, "Let us find your freelancer," at $199 on its Pro page. Outside Pro, the review of each seller falls to you.

Upwork vs Fiverr Fees: What the Buyer Pays on Top

Both platforms add charges to the freelancer's price. The figures come from Upwork's client pricing page, Upwork's help article on the conversion fee, and Fiverr's help article on paying for orders, all checked on October 13, 2026.

Buyer feeUpworkFiverr
Service fee on payments5% on the Basic plan (3% with an eligible U.S. checking account); 10% on Business Plus (8% with eligible U.S. checking)5.5% of the purchase amount, including extras and tips

Where your money sitsEscrow for fixed-price milestones; hourly time billed weekly after reviewCharged at checkout; hourly charges held in escrow until you approve the weekly report

On fees alone, the two are close. On $1,000 of work, Upwork's Basic plan adds $50 (or $30 with an eligible U.S. checking account) plus a contract initiation fee, and Fiverr adds $55. The freelancer's rate, and how many hours you end up paying for, will move your total far more than the platform's cut.

The fee that surprises buyers is Upwork's conversion fee. To pay an Upwork VA directly within the first two years, you owe 13.5% of the freelancer's hourly rate multiplied by 2,080 hours.

When a Marketplace Hire Goes Wrong

Sooner or later the hours look padded, the work falls short, or the VA goes quiet. Here is how each platform handles that.

On Upwork, the payment protection article says you can check an hourly freelancer's work diary, which shows work-in-progress snapshots of what you're being invoiced for. If hours are unrelated to the project, you can dispute the previous week's hours, and hours that don't qualify are refunded. On fixed-price milestones, you can request revisions or a refund before the escrowed funds are released.

On Fiverr, you request a cancellation through the Resolution Center on the order page, and the freelancer has 48 hours to accept or decline. If they don't respond, the order cancels automatically, per Fiverr's article on how cancellations work for clients. You can cancel without the freelancer's approval when a delivery is more than 24 hours late. Otherwise, you contact Fiverr's Customer Support. Hourly disputes are narrower: they can address only the hours reported in a weekly report, not the quality of the work, and the refund is capped at those reported hours. Fiverr Pro adds a satisfaction guarantee on eligible orders, with approved refunds credited to your Fiverr Pro balance and requests due within 14 days of completion.

Neither platform finds you the next person. If your VA leaves, you post a new job or order a new gig and start over, onboarding included.

Upwork, Fiverr, and Stellar Staff Side by Side

The last row is the one most fee comparisons skip. Starting over costs time that never appears on an invoice.

The right platform depends on the shape of the work: a one-time task, a few hours a week, or a full-time seat.

Which to Pick for Which VA Job

Match the platform to the job in front of you, not to a general reputation. Here are common VA jobs, sorted by where each one fits best.

VA jobBetter fitWhy
One-time inbox cleanup or CRM importFiverrClear deliverable, fixed package price, done in days

Full-time bilingual supportStellar StaffBilingual assistants for an added $200 a month

Be honest about volume. If you need 10 hours of help a month, a marketplace is the better tool, and a full-time seat would waste money. The same goes for specialized one-off work, where you want a specialist for a week rather than a generalist for a year.

Upwork pulls ahead once the work is weekly but still part-time. Our guide on how to hire a virtual assistant covers the job post, the test task, and the interview questions that work on any platform.

Full-time is different. You're filling a seat, not buying tasks, and a sudden departure can disrupt ongoing work and require a new hiring process.

When Neither Marketplace Fits, Choose Stellar Staff for a Full-Time VA

Marketplaces leave three jobs with you: screening, paying a contractor, and starting over when someone leaves. For a VA who runs your inbox and calendar all week, each of those costs real hours.

Stellar Staff is a placement agency built for that full-time case:

  • Selectivity. We accept the top 0.1% of applicants, from thousands of applicants a month.
  • Vetting. A 6-step application and 6 individual tests, English verification (written and spoken), reference checks, an equipment check, professional interviews and skill assessments, internal QA, and background checks.
  • Your choice. You interview 2 to 3 finalists and pick one. The search takes 5 to 10 business days.
  • Price. The Pro plan is $1,999 a month for 160 hours, about $12.50 an hour. The Executive plan is $2,999 a month.
  • Who does what. Stellar Staff handles recruiting, payroll, HR, tracking, and replacements. You direct the daily work.
  • Replacements and terms. Replacements are free, forever. Plans are month to month, with no long-term contract and 14 days' notice to cancel.

For context, about $12.50 an hour sits just under the $13 median Upwork reports for its VAs, before Upwork's marketplace fee. The difference is what comes with it: screening before you meet anyone, and a replacement if the person leaves. Stellar Staff is the #2 VA agency on Clutch and has placed 1,000+ remote hires since 2022. Our talent comes primarily from the Philippines; see our guide to hiring a virtual assistant in the Philippines.

Choose Stellar Staff if you need one dedicated VA working your business hours, 160 hours a month, and you don't want to restart the search every time someone leaves. Stay on Upwork or Fiverr if you need a few hours a week, a one-time project, or a specialist for a short job. Questions Buyers Ask When Choosing Between Upwork and Fiverr

Is Upwork or Fiverr better for hiring a virtual assistant?

Upwork is usually better for ongoing VA work, because it is built around job posts, interviews, and hourly contracts with weekly time logs. Fiverr is usually better for a defined, one-time task you can buy as a package. For a full-time VA, a placement agency is often the better fit than either marketplace.

How much does Fiverr charge buyers?

Fiverr adds a service fee of 5.5% of the purchase amount at checkout, according to its help center, plus a small flat fee on low-value orders. Hourly orders also carry a $5 order initiation fee when you accept the custom offer. The fee applies to extras and tips as well.

How much does Upwork charge clients?

On Upwork's Basic plan, clients pay a 5% marketplace fee on payments to freelancers, or 3% with an eligible U.S. checking account, plus a contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per contract. Business Plus charges 10%, or 8% with eligible U.S. checking. Moving a freelancer off Upwork within two years triggers a 13.5% conversion fee.

Can you hire a full-time virtual assistant on Upwork or Fiverr?

Yes, both support hourly work. You still screen candidates, track hours, and handle any departure yourself, and on Upwork either party can end the contract at any time. Stellar Staff places full-time VAs at 160 hours a month for $1,999 on the Pro plan, with free replacements.

What happens if my VA quits?

On Upwork or Fiverr, you post a new job or order a new gig and start the search over. With Stellar Staff, replacements are free, forever. The search takes 5 to 10 business days. You interview 2 to 3 finalists and choose the one you want.

What is a good alternative to Upwork and Fiverr for a long-term VA?

A placement agency fits long-term, full-time roles better than a marketplace, because it screens candidates and replaces people who leave. Stellar Staff accepts the top 0.1% of applicants and handles recruiting, payroll, HR, tracking, and replacements while you direct the daily work. Plans are month to month with 14 days' notice.

Start Small on a Marketplace, Move Full-Time Work to a Dedicated VA

Fiverr is the quickest way to get a defined task done. Upwork is the better place for part-time, ongoing help you'll screen and manage yourself. For small projects or a handful of hours, both beat an agency on cost.

Once the work fills a full-time week, the math changes. If you want one vetted VA working your hours, with recruiting, payroll, HR, tracking, and replacements handled by Stellar Staff, the search takes 5 to 10 business days.
